The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) at the Southern Area Health Education Center (SoAHEC) at New Mexico State University is designed to provide high school students health careers and college exploration activities, exposure to numerous health professions and health care professionals, assistance with academic instruction, counseling, and encourage the participation of disadvantaged and underrepresented groups in health professions. There are nine target high schools in southern New Mexico: Alamo-Navajo, Gadsden, Hatch, Lordsburg, Magdalena, Mescalero -Apache, Santa Teresa, Truth or Consequences, and Tularosa. Students from target high schools who are interested in completing a college education that lead to health careers are encouraged to apply.

There are two components of the Health Careers Opportunity Program at SoAHEC, New Mexico State University:

HCOP Health Clubs Interested students may join a health club at the local high school. Activities include instruction in health-related topics, health careers exploration, job shadowing opportunities, health professional guest speakers, personal development and study skills workshops, and educational field trips to health care establishments and colleges/universities offering degrees in health. Summer Program Members of HCOP Health Clubs are eligible to apply for a six-week summer enrichment program at the NMSU campus. Participants receive academic instruction (science, biology, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, etc.), counseling, attend study skills and cultural competency workshops, participate in recreational, educational and cultural field trips, receive a stipend, and conduct a research on a health-related topic.

To apply, HCOP applicants must submit the following:

-  A completed HCOP Application - Form A
-  Personal Essay/Statement - Form B
-  Teacher or Counselor Recommendation - Form C         
-  Standardized test scores     
-  Latest high school transcript (copy of grades)
